About the Department:

The Gynaecologic Oncology service at Tata Medical Center offers a comprehensive  preventive, diagnostic, treatment and over all management  for women with precancerous and cancerous gynaecological conditions, involving a multi disciplinary team. The experts at TMC in this team are dedicated towards providing evidence based management for cancers of female reproductive organs utilising modern and state of art technology .  Our team has been providing these services for national and international patients over a decade while being actively involved in  cancer research.

We are the only institution in eastern India and one of the very few in in India that provides advanced ultraradical cytoreductive surgery, HIPEC and Robotic surgery for Gynaecological cancer patients.

Additional Specialty clinics:

  • Preventive oncology clinic : Works towards prevention of cervical cancers utilising cytology, HPV DNA testing and Colposcopy while providing outpatient based treatment for pre-cancer (LEEP/LEETZ)
  • Genetic and family clinic : Provides pre and post test counseling for women who are at high risk for familial cancers like ovary and uterus. We also provide risk reducing salpingo-oophorectomy / hysterectomy for women found to be at high risk for ovarian / uterine cancer.

We at TMC have been operating on  the Da Vinci  Si robot since 2017 to treat patients with endometrial ( uterus) cancer, early cervical and ovarian cancers while extending the benefits of minimal blood loss , pain and hospital stay to our patients.  Presently we are performing about  90 to 100 robotic surgeries in a year.

This procedure involves removal of all tumour in the abdomen followed by delivery of heated solution of intrabadominal chemotherapy using a special pump. International trials have shown survival benefits of HIPEC in selected ovarian cancer patients. We have been providing HIPEC to these women at TMC since 2018 with promising results.

Teaching programme

We have been providing world class training to national and international postgraduate doctors since inception in 2011 through Clinical Fellowship program.

Our department was accredited as one of the first four centres in India by the National Board of Examinations  and the super-specialty board certification course  ( DNB-SS Gynae Oncology) was started in 2019.  

We also run an international fellowship program accredited by European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO)

Research Activities

Department of Gynae Oncology has been actively involved in cancer research pertaining to cancer prevention ( SyMeC trial), ovarian cancer management and molecular studies with several national and international publications.  Trials involving  sentinel lymphnode, HIPEC, hereditary gynae cancers and  newer drugs for ovarian cancers are ongoing.
