PATIENT CARE

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES

It may not always be about what we know, but it’s always about how much we care.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES

Tata Medical Center

The Tomotherapy and Novalis Tx treatment units facilitate the administration of high precision radiation therapy targeted at the cancer bearing tissues with minimal collateral damage to adjoining healthy tissues reducing the potential side-effects of radiation. They are among the most advanced treatment delivery units in the world at this time. TMC is the first center in India after the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai with Tomotherapy and among the first centers in India to possess the versatile capabilities of the Novalis Tx.

Together these units provide TMC the capability to offer:

  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for extremely conformal dose distributions.
  • Volumetric Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) with MV and KV imaging for precisely targeting the cancer on a daily basis.
  • Intracranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery for treating small lesions in the brain with a single dose of radiation.
  • Stereotactic Radiotherapy for treating small cancers in different parts of the body with a few high doses of radiation.
  • Rapid Arc or Volumetric Arc IMRT that enables IMRT treatments to be delivered within a few minutes adding to patient convenience and accuracy of delivery.

Respiratory gating on the Novalis Tx which allows accurate targeting of tumours that are moving with respiration.

Robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery — procedures performed through tiny incisions.

Tata Medical Center procured the Da Vinci Si (model) Robot with Dual Console and Advanced Imaging (Firefly) in May 2017. The procurement was made possible due to a CSR donation given by the Tata Education & Development Trust.

Robotic surgery is presently being offered for the following procedures:

  1. Urological Surgeries– Radical prostatectomy, Radical Cystectomy with Ileal Conduit, Pelvic Exenteration, Radical / Partial Nephrectomy, Ureteric Re-implantation, BoariFlap.
  2. GynaecologicalSurgeries–TotalHysterectomy, Pelvic Lymphadenectomy, Para Aortic Lymphadenectomy, Total Omentectomy, Radical Hysterectomy, Parametrectomy, Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy.
  3. Head and Neck Surgeries– Trans Oral Robotic Surgery for Tonsil, Base of Tongue, Oropharyngeal and Laryngeal Cancers, Retro Auricular Robotic Thyroidectomy, Neck Dissection, Submandibular Gland Excision.
  4. Thoracic Surgery–Oesophagectomy.
  5. Colorectal Surgeries– Anterior Resection, Sigmoid Colectomy, Abdomino-Perineal Resection.

There are handpicked surgeons from each department with adequate experience, expertise and training who, along with a dedicated team of nursing and technical staff, provide this service to the patients. Since its introduction in June 2017, over 470 robotic surgeries have been performed at TMC till date.

Molecular imaging techniques like PET and SPECT scans allow functional or biological imaging of the body. This means that it can identify not only the form of body tissues but also its function or metabolism. PET-CT scans identify not only any suspicious mass or tissue, but also its cellular metabolic activity. This gives it a special role in the diagnosis, staging, treatment planning and response assessment in cancer. SPECT scanners are versatile and allow a wide range of nuclear imaging tests that are able to identify metabolic properties of different body tissues with unique applications in oncology.

Molecular Diagnostics Tests enhance diagnostic capabilities to understand the disease better. They help identify the unique characteristics of an individual’s cancer and may be able to predict the likely treatment outcomes. Using the information gained from these tests it may be possible to customize treatment for individual patients. TMC provides a wide array of molecular and cytogenetic diagnostic techniques including:

  • Real time PCR
  • HLA typing
  • Karyotyping
  • FISH
  • Chimerism Analysis
  • ABI sequencer for molecular virology

The Operation Theatres (OTs) and Intensive Care Units (ICU) come replete with state-of-the-art surgical and anaesthetic equipment and amenities which  provide cutting-edge technology for patient treatment. This includes:

  • HEPA filter and laminar air flow in OTs
  • Anti-static Epoxy flooring in OTs
  • Operation Tables with patient transporters
  • Harmonic scalpel and Ligasure to optimize hemostasis
  • Point-of-care ultrasound for various procedures in OT and ICU
  • Real-time global hemostasis monitoring during surgery
  • Chute system for transportation of frozen section samples
  • Fast-flow fluid warmer and Equator for prevention of hypothermia
  • Anesthesia induction room
  • Anesthesia gas scavenging system for prevention of operating room pollution with anesthetic gases.
  • Anesthesia workstations integrated with the Hospital Information System
  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)
  • Robotic Surgery
  • Indirect Video-laryngoscopy to manage life-threatening airway emergencies
  • Advanced and functional hemodynamic monitoring
  • Ventilators with auto-wean features.

The Tata Medical Center has a 9-bed bone marrow transplant unit that is the first of its kind in the entire eastern part of India. It has the capacity for both allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplants, as well as matched-unrelated donor and cord blood transplants. All transplant rooms have positive pressure HEPA filtration.around 500 BMT procedures have been conducted in the last ten years at TMC

A pneumatic chute system has l been deployed to transport samples, drugs, documents and other consumables to different parts of the hospital.
